Nearly 150 pieces of equipment at U.S. Steel's Gary Works, including loaders, dump trucks, flatbeds and Bobcats, will soon fueled by B5 biodiesel, Pure Green Cars reports. The fleet uses an average of 7,000 gallons of fuel a week.
The conversion to B5 began in April 2007 at the Gary Works. U.S. Steel has tested B5 biodiesel in plant locomotives with great success. The company plans to transition to B10 biodiesel for this equipment in two to three months.
U.S. Steel is currently looking to build on the success at Gary Works by using biodiesel throughout the company, beginning with facilities in the U.S. The move to B5 biodiesel at the Gary Works came with the assistance of South Shore Clean Cities, a nonprofit facilitating the creation of a sustainable alternative transportation fuels industry in Northern Indiana.
