PepsiCo announced they are purchasing renewable energy certificate s (REC's) for three of their largest bottling plants. The REC's will match 100% of the electricity used by their US operations. Together, the three plants are purchasing a total of 629 million kilowatt hours of green energy. It would be the second largest purchase in the U.S. among the Environmental Protection Agency's Green Power Partnership.

The energy comes from green sources such as solar, wind, geothermal, biogas, biomass and low impact hydro.

The EPA updates its list of its top partners quarterly and the top five for the second quarter are PepsiCo, Wells Fargo and Co., Whole Foods Market, The Pepsi bottling group and the U.S. Air Force.

The three groups within PepsiCo include the Pepsi Bottling Group, Pepsi America, and Pepsi Bottling Ventures, LLC.

"The purchases made by these three bottlers represent a broader effort by our entire system to work together and continue what PepsiCo started in April with its record purchase," says Dawn Hudson, President and CEO of Pepsi Cola North America. "This represents a collective approach to protecting the environment and becoming more sustainable in the long term- something our consumers, customers, employees, and investors can feel good about. It's all a part of PepsiCo's commitment to Performance with Purpose to do better by doing better."

The REC's are being purchased from Sterling Plant, a leading green power marketer. It was also the supplier of PepsiCo's April purchase of 1.1 billion kilowatt hours.

EPA Deputy Administrator, Marcus Peacock commended PepsiCo for their commitment

The EPA estimates the power purchased is the equivalent of the needs of 39,000 American households annually and the combined purchases is equivalent to avoiding CO2 emissions from 71,000 passenger cars per year.

These purchases qualify PepsiCo to become members of the EPA's Green Power Leadership Club. The club requires a purchase of 10 times the minimum requirements to become a partner. The Club includes 330 other partner organizations that demonstrate environmental leadership.
